The EU’s role in democracy building in Africa
A consultation meeting organized by International IDEA in cooperation with the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 21-23 April 2009
The policies and actions of the European Union (EU), as one of the largest economic and political entities globally, impact democracy-building world-wide. Whilst much has been done to strengthen these policies and actions, there is still room for improvement.

International IDEA has launched an initiative to engage regional organizations in dialogue and consultations on the EU and its role in democracy building. This will result in a set of policy options to strengthen the democracy-building dimension in the EU’s policies and actions. IDEA will present these policy options to Sweden in view of the upcoming Swedish EU presidency in 2009.

International IDEA has recruited a project team to implement this project. The team will build on International IDEA’s networks and knowledge resources. The initiative is supported by the Swedish Government.

On 21-23 April 2009, IDEA in cooperation with the African Union organised a consultation meeting in Addis Ababa that brought together senior policy makers, academics, and civil society representatives from Africa to brainstorm, exchange experiences and interactively discuss key issues salient to the EU, its policies and actions, its relations with Africa, and its role in democracy-building. Awil Mohamoud was invited to present a position paper entitled The EU, the African diaspora in Europe and its impact on democracy building in Africa.
