This fact-sheet is the first of a series of fact-sheets that the African Diaspora Policy Centre (ADPC) produces per year. The nexus between diaspora and development is an emerging research and policy field which will remain an important area in the development cooperation relations between the North and the South in the foreseeable future. The word ‘development’ in the context of migration and development has a wider conceptual meaning. The reason is that the interaction of the diaspora vis-a-vis the domestic situations in the homelands are broad and encompass not only the transfer of monetary values but also the transfer of other values of transnational social and political dimensions. In this regard, the contribution of the diaspora organisations and individuals to peace building, improving human rights conditions, advancing institutional knowledge, upgrading and strengthening governance institutions, deepening democratisation processes and facilitating knowledge transfer (brain gain) should all be considered to be forms of development and be widely discussed.
